I wake up reaching out to touch you
and feel your body pressed tightly to mine at night.
I walk your foot falls to the bathroom
and clean my teeth with your brush.
I eat cereal and fruit for breakfast
and sit in your seat –
I can still feel the heat
from your body
even though
I know
that can’t be…
I taste your lips on mine when you kiss me goodbye
and live you as I catch the train
and work my day.
I breathe you in when I unlock the door
and put my shoes in your spot on the hall floor.
I sweep your fingers through my hair
and touch where you touched when you touched me –
there.
I feel your body pressed tightly to mine at night
and wake up reaching out…
to nothing. To thin air.
